If you've hired a Certified StoryBrand Guide or are thinking about it, the BrandScript workshop is where the work actually begins. Here's what it is, what happens during it, and what you walk away with.
What Is a BrandScript?
A BrandScript is the core messaging document produced by the StoryBrand framework. It maps out your customer's story: what they want, what's in their way, how you fit as their guide, and what their life looks like after working with you.
It's not a tagline. It's not a mission statement. It's not a vision board. It's a structured document, built around seven specific elements, that gives every piece of your marketing a single source of truth to draw from. Your website copy comes from it. Your email sequences come from it. Your pitch comes from it. Once the BrandScript is done, all of those things become significantly easier to write.
The Seven Elements of a BrandScript
The workshop works through each of these in sequence:
- The character. Who is your customer, and what do they actually want? Not what you want for them. What they want.
- The problem. What's in their way? This has three layers: the external problem (the practical thing), the internal problem (how it makes them feel), and the philosophical problem (why it's wrong that this problem exists).
- The guide. That's you. The framework positions your business as the guide, not the hero. You demonstrate empathy (you understand their problem) and competence (you've helped others solve it).
- The plan. A simple, three-step process that shows your customer how working with you works. Not a 12-step methodology. Three clear steps that make the path feel obvious.
- The call to action. What do you want them to do next? One clear action. Not five options.
- The stakes. What does success look like? What happens if they do nothing? Both sides of this equation belong in your marketing.
- The transformation. Who does your customer become after working with you? This is the emotional payoff, the real reason people hire you.
What Happens During the Workshop
The workshop is a working session with your guide. Depending on your engagement tier, it runs from 90 minutes to a half day. You're not watching a presentation. You're answering questions, working through the framework together, and building the document in real time.
The questions sound simple. They aren't always easy. Questions like "what does your customer actually want?" can take a while to answer honestly, because most business owners have been thinking about what they offer rather than what their customer is trying to achieve. That shift is the whole point of the exercise.
A good guide will push back when your answers drift into business language. If you say "we provide comprehensive solutions for organizations looking to optimize their operational efficiency," that's not what your customer wants. Your guide will ask what that means for the person sitting across from you and keep working until you have something real.
What You Walk Away With
After the workshop, you have a completed BrandScript. That's the foundation. You also walk away with a messaging toolkit built from it:
- One-liner variants you can use in introductions, email signatures, and bios
- Taglines for your website and marketing
- An elevator pitch you can actually say out loud without stumbling
- Social profile bios that communicate clearly and immediately
- Written next-step recommendations for how to apply the messaging
These are ready to use. They've been developed collaboratively and tested against the framework during the session. You don't walk out with homework. You walk out with usable tools.
Why the Workshop Comes Before Everything Else
Because everything else depends on it. A website built without a BrandScript is a guess. The designer guesses at the message. The copywriter guesses at the customer. The result might look good, but it won't convert the way it should because the strategy isn't underneath it.
This is where most service business websites go wrong. They're built on aesthetic decisions and rough ideas about what the company does, rather than on a clear picture of who the customer is and what they need to hear. The BrandScript fixes the foundation before you start building on top of it.
What if My Business Feels Too Complicated?
Most business owners feel this way. The framework forces simplification, and simplification feels like losing something. It isn't.
Your customer doesn't need to understand everything about your business. They need to understand what you do, whether it's for them, and what to do next. If they can't get there in the first 30 seconds on your website, they'll leave regardless of how good the work actually is.
The complication is usually a symptom of not having been forced to think clearly about your customer yet. The workshop does that forcing. It's not always comfortable, but the output is almost always clearer than what you walked in with.
Is One Workshop Enough?
For the messaging foundation, yes. The BrandScript doesn't need to be redone every year. It should be relatively stable because your customer's core goals and frustrations don't change quickly.
Where ongoing support adds value is in the application. Applying your messaging consistently across new content, new offers, new team members, and changing market conditions is where a long-term partnership with a guide pays off. The strategy session gives you the foundation. The ongoing relationship makes sure it stays useful.
Every engagement I offer starts with a BrandScript workshop. The Clarity Intensive is a standalone 90-minute session for business owners who want the messaging foundation without a full engagement. The Clarity and Authority engagements include the workshop as the first step of a 12-month partnership.
